Advancing STEM focus of China trip

Two Eads Elementary School teachers (in Munster, IN) were among 10 Indiana teachers chosen as the first International STEM Fellows to visit China. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

Eads first-grade teacher Laura Florek and fourth-grade teacher Wendy McCarthy were chosen from among 30 applicants. The group of teachers visited China for 10 days in October to observe math and science instruction in Chinese public elementary schools.

Florek called it an invaluable opportunity to learn more about STEM education from experienced STEM teachers.

“Students love hands-on learning activities at the elementary level. Little do they know they are learning to communicate, collaborate, think critically and express themselves creatively as they engage in fun, hands-on STEM lessons,” she said.
