Description: Founded in the thinking of Gauss, Fermat, and a host of others, number theory reaches back to the earliest history of mathematics and forward to the cutting edge of current research. In this fun and intellectually challenging course, students will rely on their ingenuity and problem-solving skills as they explore: Numbers and their representation; Divisibility and factorization; Primes and their distribution; Number theoretic functions; Congruences; Primitive roots; Diophantine equations; Quadratic residues Sums of squares
